Sugar cookie hearts for Valentine's Day

My fiancé works late on Thursday nights, so our Valentine's Day celebration happened on Friday. I wanted to have something for Thursday, though, so on Wednesday night I made cocoa sugar cookies with our houseguest.

As usual, baked goods are very warm-toned because of the lighting in our kitchen.
I used the cocoa sugar cookies recipe from (where else?) the Canadian Living baking book I've mentioned before. I added about half a teaspoon of cinnamon and about an eighth of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper. I froze half of the recipe and chilled the other half in the fridge for about an hour before rolling it out (using cocoa powder to prevent sticking) and cutting out the heart shape with a Wilton cookie cutter. I baked them for about 8 minutes and let cool for about half an hour.

The icing is just icing sugar, warm water, and food colouring. As per usual, I screwed up (because I hate icing sugar) and made the icing a little too watery, which is why the designs ran a bit. I don't have icing bags so we used Ziploc bags with the tip cut off.

The neat and tidy purple ones in the background were done very methodically by our houseguest; the messy, multi-coloured ones that look like they were done by a five-year-old were my handiwork.

Very easy, and lots of fun! They tasted pretty good, too, and were popular with my co-workers.

What did you do for Valentine's day?

    1. I know! And the dough freezes really well so that you can make them in batches. That's a definite plus in my book; I don't need two dozen cookies lying around the house.

I love reading your baking adventures on your blog.
